Service Idea: Care Packages for the Homeless

I have an aunt that has been making care packages for homeless people for the past six years. She keeps a few in her car, and hands them out as she sees someone on the street in need. She didn’t ever tell me about it or broadcast it, because she does it for the people, not for the recognition. I found out she was doing it from my Mom, and was so inspired. I emailed my aunt, asking her about it and she told me what an impactful thing its been in her life, and how much its changed the way she sees people.

Just the other day a group of friends and I decided to create some of these packages for homeless people in our area. There are a lot of people where we live, especially in New Orleans that are homeless, so there is definitely a need here (and honestly probably everywhere right?). A few of us brought some items to fill paper lunch bags with. These items were: water bottles, granola bars, band aids, baby wipes, and feminine hygiene products. Some other ideas for homeless care packages that I’ve heard are: socks, deodorant, soap, infant formula (for those with babies), trail mix, dried fruit, crackers, juice, beef jerky, pop off lid cans of tuna or chili.

Have you ever tried something like this? How did it go when you gave them out to people?
