Have you tried mirror parenting?

So, I figured out something last year, when we lived in an apartment with a big sliding mirror door. When I played in there with my kids, I was so much more aware of how I was interacting with them, and how they were seeing me. Were they seeing me with a vacant, tired, or impatient face? Or were they seeing me with love, excitement to play with them, and an interest in them? It was definitely the former when I first started observing.

This (along with one of my favorite parenting books I mentioned last week, Playful Parenting) was such a helpful resource in helping me interact with my kids in positive and loving ways. And even more importantly, making sure my interactions come across that way to them.

Often, lately, when I feel myself getting tired/cranky/preoccupied I’ll do a refresh of this. I’ll sit with my kids in front of a mirror and just play with them. Its such a simple thing that has been so fun and helpful. I’ll find myself making silly faces more, tickling them more, smiling more, and just having a better time overall.

Have you ever tried mirror parenting? Do you have any parenting tricks that help you be a better parent?

Have a great weekend! 5.18.18

How is your weekend going? We just went to the fair tonight and had so much fun. It was fun to see all of the excitement through their little eyes. They loved (most of) the rides, and we had fun sharing some pizza. Kids just make everything more fun.

What do you have going on this weekend?

After hearing about the Texas shooting tonight, my heart is super heavy. This podcast episode was some great insight into how to help our children (and for me my boys) feel worthy of love and belonging. (It’s also about one of the parenting books I referenced in my all-time favorite parenting books, if you need a sneak peek into it!)

I’m making this salad for lunch tomorrow. We’ve made it in the past, its such a perfect summer salad.

My favorite under-eye brightener, at an incredible price point.

A book I’m reading right now. A really interesting read.

This made me laugh. I need to start self-tanning for swimsuit season!

Speaking of self-tanners, this is one I’m using occasionally right now and really love.

Really excited about some of these movies and shows coming to our favorite streaming sites.

A delicious looking watermelon smoothie. We’re in serious heat right now, and anything watermelon is such a great refreshing treat.

I’ve heard awesome things about this children’s toy, apparently it keeps kids entertained for hours. Have you tried it? I really want to try this beautiful wooden version.

I had the most amazing sandwich I’ve ever had, in Florence last November. The little shop called Ino, has created a cookbook thats on pre-order right now. I’m dying to learn how to make these amazing paninis.

Have a great weekend!
